  • 2Configuring Hardware Settings

Installing your Vx810

To begin setup of your Vx810, take your boxed pinpad to the terminal you will be installing it and unpack the hardware. There are two hardware configurations for the Vx810: 'Direct Host' mode, whereby your pinpad is connected to your venues' network and communicates directly with your payment provider, and 'ECRi Pass Through' mode, whereby your pinpad is connected directly to the terminal.

Direct Host Setup

If you are using the Direct Host configuration, you will need the included Ethernet dongle and power cord, as well as a CAT5 cable to connect your dongle to your network. To install your pinpad, begin by connecting the dongle to your network using the CAT5 cable and the '10BaseT' port on the dongle, and then plug in the dongle's power supply. Once this is done, secure the dongle somewhere near the terminal so that it isn't in any danger of being disconnected or strained during normal use of the pinpad. Finally, use a small screwdriver to remove the socket panel from the back of the Vx810 pinpad and plug in the dongle connector. Replace the panel over top of the connector and screw it firmly into place:

Pass Through Setup

If you are using Pass Through mode, you will need the included serial connector and power cord, as well as any adapter you may need to connect this to your terminal. To install your pinpad, simply plug the serial connector and any required adaptors into the back of your terminal, and connect the serial port to the included power supply. Then use a small screwdriver to remove the socket panel from the back of the Vx810 pinpad and plug in the other end of the serial connector. Replace the panel over top of the connector and screw it firmly into place:

Configuring Hardware Settings

Once you plug in your pinpad to a 'powered up' connection, the pinpad will begin it's boot sequence. A variety of error messages may appear during this sequence; this is normal. Once your pinpad has finished booting, the 'Welcome' screen will display. It is at this time you may begin configuration.

Quick Setup

To start off, you must go to the VMAC boot screen and run the POSPAD quick setup. To do this, press the (CORR) and (1) buttons SIMULTANEOUSLY on the pinpad from the Welcome screen, and enter the default password, 123456. You are now at the boot screen from which the pinpad applications are started, shown below. Select the POSPAD option, and, before the application is done loading, press the (ALPHA) and (8) buttons on the pinpad simultaneously. If you did this correctly, you will now be at the first prompt of the Quick Setup wizard. Select the wizard settings as follows:

Verifone Vx805 Installation

  • Select your desired language.
  • Select 'PCI' if you are using the Direct Host configuration, or 'INT' if you are using the Pass Through configuration. (Use Direct)
  • Select your communications type (just use 'RS232' if you are using the Direct Host configuration)
  • Select your baud rate (just use '19200' if you are using the Direct Host configuration)
  • Select your data format (just use '7b EVEN' if you are using the Direct Host configuration)

After Quick Setup has completed, the pinpad will return to the welcome screen.

General Setup

You are now ready to configure more advanced options on your pinpad. From the Welcome screen, press (CANC) and (3) simultaneously on the pinpad, and enter the password 123456. You are presented with a plethora of options from the settings menu.

You are advised to ONLY change the settings that are discussed here, as Volante has been configured with all other settings at their factory default values. Altering settings not mentioned below may result in improper operation of your pinpad.

  • Tips: Tip settings can be found under the 'Terminal' section. To prompt the user to enter tips, you must set 'Tip Processing = On'. Note that there are two tip modes: 'Basic' and 'Enhanced'. For Basic tip entry, where the user is simply prompted to enter a tip amount, set 'Tip % nn.nn = 0', and set 'EnhancedTipProc = Off' from the 'Merchant' section. For Enhanced tip entry, where the user can enter a tip amount or has the option of using a number of prespecified percentages, use the same settings as Basic with 'EnhancedTipProc = On'. Then set the 'Sug Tip%' values in the 'Terminal' section to specify the options you want to give the use (you must set these in the order Sug Tip 1 < Sug Tip 2 < Sug Tip 3). You can also set 'MoneTipNone = On' to give the user the option of entering no tip.

Configuring Internet Settings (Direct Host mode only)

If you are using the Direct Host configuration, you will need to configure the network settings of you pinpad. To do this, enter the boot screen once more by pressing (CORR) and (1) simultaneously from the Welcome screen, enter default password of 123456 - ok. Then press (2) from the boot menu to enter the Ethernet CommServer menu:

This menu contains everything you need to set up and test your pinpad connection. To begin, open the 'Ethernet Config' menu on the far right hand side (hit button under the calculator looking icon). Then choose IP section, and configure the fields as follows:

  • IP Settings: Set this to 'Static'
  • IP Address: Set this to a unique IP that is not used by any other device on your network. To make '.' characters, enter a 1 and use the (ALPHA) button to cycle to the period.
  • Subnet Mask: Set this to the same address used by other devices on your network.
  • Gateway IP Address: Set this to the same address used by other devices on your network.
  • DNS1 IP Address: Set this to the same address used by other devices on your network.
  • DNS2 IP Address: Set this to the same address used by other devices on your network.

NOTE: The port value on the Vx810 cannot be configured. It always takes the default value of 1.

Once you are done configuring these fields, you may exit this menu. You may also need to configure the Diag and Setup as specified by your payment processor, but most likely you can leave the rest of the settings in the Ethernet Config menu alone. Press the (CANCEL) button to return to the main screen.

Now that your IP has been set, you may proceed to test your configuration in the Diagnostics menu (second from the bottom right, the wrench and hammer icon). Select 'Troubleshoot' and the pinpad will ping all of the relevant addresses, including your payment processor. If some of these tests fail, select the 'Repair' option and try again. If you are still failing some of these tests, go back to the Ethernet Config menu and make sure your IP settings are correct. Also, make sure your firewall isn't interfering with the pinpad by checking that the relevant ports are open (you will need port 1 open for the device, as well as whatever ports your payment processor uses to communicate with the device).
When you are done configuring your Internet settings, press the (*) button to return to the boot menu and restart the pinpad application by selecting POSPAD.

    • If you are unable to RESET the pinpad from Volante, please power off the pinpad and then turn it back on to apply the change made to it.

Testing the Vx810

Now that installation and configuration is complete, you may proceed to test your Vx810. First, set up your payment provider by making the appropriate changes in the Volante Back Office and/or POS. The following guides provide instructions on how to do this for the payment providers who support the Vx810:

Once you've made all the necessary changes, go to Screen Config in the Volante Back Office, and add a 'Reset Pin Pad' button to any and all screens you plan on using the pinpad. When this is done, synchronize with your terminals and start the POS on one of your terminals. From whichever venue screen you are using, press the new 'Reset Pin Pad' button and examine your pinpad. It should go through an initialization sequence for ~30 seconds, after which it display 'Login Successful' and return to the 'Welcome' screen. If the login was not successful, make sure you've properly set your merchant/ECR number when setting up your payment provider. (if you are in Direct Host mode, make sure your pinpad is able to properly communicate with the payment provider by running the aforementioned 'Troubleshoot' option). If the pinpad does nothing when you hit the 'Reset Pin Pad' button, make sure your port settings (Pass Through mode) or IP settings (Direct Host mode) are properly set in both the Vx810 configuration AND the payment processor configuration.

Note that you will need to use the 'Reset Pin Pad' button on a regular basis, as the session with your payment processor will periodically time-out or need to be refreshed in the event of an error. If you are getting a hardware error (ie TRANSACTION NOT COMPLETED) while processing a transaction, reset the pinpad session and try again.

Once your pinpad has been initialized, try making a Debit and/or Credit payment with the device. If everything is set up correctly, you should be able to pay using both EMV (chip) and swipe cards with the device. If transactions consistently time out or experience other hardware errors, make sure your Vx810, Volante, and your router are configured correctly. If your transactions are consistently declined, contact your payment processor for assistance.

Error Codes

While processing a transaction, you may occasionally experience hardware error messages that are not from your payment provider. Most often, these errors present a relevant error message describing what went wrong (user cancelled the transaction, pinpad time out, etc). Occassionally, you may see an error that Volante does not recognize (ie 'error unknown'), along with the relevant error code. The list of hardware error codes for the Vx810 is listed in the VeriFone Vx810 Response Codes article. If such errors persist, please contact your Volante representative for assistance.
